FESTIVALS & CELEBRATIONS

Festivals and Celebrations

Enugwuabo, like many Igbo communities celebrates new yam festival (otute) in August of every year. This preeminent festival however takes on additional meaning for a farming community whose primary crop is yam. It is a time of thanksgiving for the harvest and also a time of rejuvenation, communion and refreshing as extended families come together in their ‘Obu’ to eat together. The celebration starts with the roasting of yam harvested from the farms. The yams are eaten with fresh palm oil source mixed with Ukpaka spiced with leaves, pepper and garnished with onions. In the evening of same day while the masquerades are displaying in the village square, as an integral part of the festival the youths entertain their own crowd with peer matched traditional wrestling.

The community comes together to enjoy the annual Masquerade carnival on the first of January. This has become a permanent feature in the calendar for many families in surrounding towns as they come to enjoy the company of friends and family while being entertained by a variety of masquerades. There is also the Ayaya carnival of 29th December hosted by Daza Aniama.
