The yam was traditionally considered to be the male crop while the cocoyam was seen as the female crop. While the men cultivated their yams and stored them in huge barns the women were allowed to cultivate the cocoyam and were never required to contribute the fruit of their labour or the wealth accruing from the sale of the cocoyams to the family output. It was in fact a very early tool that gave the women folk empowerment and some financial independence.
